The Dorcas Foundation for Woman
Dorcas: dor’-kas (Dorkas, the Greek equivalent of Aramaic tabitha, "a gazelle"):
The name was borne by a Christian woman of Joppa. She is called a disciple: Ac 9:36, the only place in the New Testament where the feminine form is used). She seems to have had some means and also to have been a leader in the Christian community. Dorcas was beloved for the manner in which she used her position and means, for she "was full of good works, and almsdeeds which she did." Among her charities was the clothing of the poor with garments she herself made (Ac 9:39), and by following her example, the "Dorcas Foundation for Women" is established in the Ministry of Outreach as a means of perpetuating her character as a Christian. The program offers assistance devoted to social, emotional and spiritual care, promiting life enrichment for all participants.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Dorcas Foundation for Women serve females 9 years and above from diverse groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are continually seeking donors who want to undergird this much needed service in and to the community.
HISTORY
The Dorcas Connection is a group committed to lending aid to the nourishment of our community through edification, beautification and social connectedness. Birthed in the heart of founder Mary Washington, The Dorcas Connection is the God-breathed name given to her on November 21, 2010 while at work in her boutique and design studio. For over 19 years she had worked with hundreds of women through outreach efforts and has pondered over her heart’s desire to head a social outreach program which nurtured pre-teen girls, teen girls and women of all ages in a distinct and different way. Throughout this time a name had never been mentioned, but when she heard it- it fit her vision perfectly. Her philosophy regarding her designer styled hand crafted pearls given to each new participant is that their beauty is so distinct, each piece hung around the neck radiates the wearers beauty (inner beauty) and glamour is the result of that intimate connection. This ministry is carried out through the FMSM Auxiliary "Women of Virtue", headed by Sha'ree Lewis.
SOCIAL MISSION To be a catalyst of reconstruction for those negatively influenced or experiencing social, emotional and/or spiritual deprivation; with focus on issues such as low self esteem, over-whelming boredom, depression, addictions, lack of social skills, anti-social behavior and need related issues.
THE ATTACK
DCCO will use little to none of the commonly known methods of confronting the above mentioned issues. Our methodology is Christian based and is highly influenced on sharing the love of God through actions purposed to assist in lifting the person up out of the tendency of despair and promote wholeness by connecting to the person’s inner self. Our motive is to encourage living life to its fullness while engaging in an age appropriate healthy mind, body and spirit. Sponsoring activities such as glamour, fashion and talent shows will support exterior personal enhancements as well as development of social skills through assigned tasks or mingling with members of the group. Character development, life skills and relaxing is always a part of any DCCO gathering and the founders fully expect any one who engages- to not only glean comradery among peers but also develop skills to face and conquer the issues of life.
